MAYOR ERIC JACKSON ISSUES WINTER STORM ADVISORY AS CITY PREPARES

FOR UP TO 16 INCHES OF SNOW AND START-UP OF SNOW-REMOVAL OPERATIONS

Trenton, N.J. — Following a meeting and communication with key members of his cabinet, Mayor Eric Jackson announced today that the city is preparing for an approaching winter storm system that could bring snow accumulation of up to 16 inches and wind speeds of up to 30 mph to the region from late Sunday evening into Tuesday.

The Mayor added that the city would begin salting and sanding roads early Sunday evening and start-up snow-removal operations when accumulations reach four inches.

“We are ready and will execute our plan accordingly, and I am here, personally to help guide city operations to get us through this winter storm,” said Mayor Jackson. “In addition to salting, sanding and snow removal, I am urging residents to be sensitive to the needs of their neighbors—particularly the elderly—and to pitch in to help keep designated snow-emergency routes clear of their cars to enable us to work on making roads safe and navigable.”

When accumulation reaches approximately three inches, city residents should move their vehicles from snow-emergency routes—as is required by city ordinance 14-2.10—to the nearest public school parking lots for the duration of the storm. The city will commence plowing operations when snowfall reaches four inches.

Vehicles left parked along snow-emergency routes will be towed to the nearest public school parking lots to facilitate snow-removal operations. Residents whose vehicles are towed can phone the Trenton Police Department non-emergency telephone number at 609-989-4170. Owners of vehicles left in public school parking lots for at least two hours after the city has notified residents that they must be moved, may be responsible for towing and storage fees.

The city will use its “Robocall” or Emergency Broadcast System to notify residents when to move their vehicles from public school parking lots. Additionally, during the cold weather, the City of Trenton Department of Inspections enforces city ordinances that require a temperature of 68°F be maintained from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and at least 60°F from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. For apartment buildings with more than three units, a temperature of 65°F must be maintained from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. A property’s heating equipment must be in good and safe working condition and capable of adequately heating all habitable rooms.

Tenants with faulty heating equipment and/or indoor temperatures below these standards and who have also notified their landlords can call the Department of Inspections at (609) 989-3560. Residents are advised not to use the oven or kerosene heat as sources of heat. Do not use a space heater indoors that requires combustible fuel.
