If either applicant is a resident of New Jersey, state law requires that you obtain the application for a marriage or civil union license from the municipality where either applicant resides.
If both parties are not residents of New Jersey, the license must be obtained from the municipality where the ceremony will take place and is only good for use in that municipality. Upon applying, you will need to supply us with your definite date of marriage or civil union, location of marriage or civil union, and the officiant's name.
For Trenton residents, a marriage or civil union application can be made at the Office of Vital Statistics in City Hall, 319 East State St., Trenton, New Jersey 08608. Applications are taken Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.and from 2:00 p.m.to 3:00 p.m. Call 609-989-3236 for more information.
To apply for a marriage or civil union license print and complete the first page of the application (Reg-15). DO NOT SIGN THE FORM PRIOR TO COMING TO THE OFFICE OF VITAL STATISTICS. In addition to the application:
1. The couple will need to show proof of identity (i.e., valid driver's license, valid passport or current state/federal/county ID).
2. The couple must provide proof of address.
3. Your Social Security card or Social Security number will be needed as per NJSA
37:1-17.
4. A witness (18 years or older) will need to be present at the time of application.
5. A fee of $28.00 cash or money order (payable to “City of Trenton”) is collected at the time of application.
Additional requested documents (not required but helpful for preparing the license):
1. A certified copy of your birth certificate to establish your parent's names and related birth information.
2. You should present divorce papers or proof of the termination of your civil union or domestic partnership with the raised seal, if applicable. Divorce decrees are not issued from this office. Their phone number is 609-777-0092.
3. Present a certified copy of a death certificate for deceased spouse, if applicable.
Additional Information:
1. There is a mandatory 72-hour waiting period from the time of application. There is no 72-hour waiting period for a remarriage; however, you must bring in a certified copy of your existing marriage/civil union.
2. Before the license can be picked up, you will need to provide us with the date of marriage/civil union, the place of marriage/civil union, and the name of the officiant who will perform the ceremony.
3. NJ State law no longer requires a blood test for marriage/civil union licenses.
4. Foreign language documents must be accompanied by a certified English translation.
5. The application will be kept on file for six months.
