The LGBTQ Liaison position was created in June 2020 to complement the work of the Office of Citizen Concerns. This role was created to facilitate outreach to and advocate for policies that support members of Trenton’s LGBTQ community.
Many of the challenges common to urban communities are experienced with even greater frequency by members of the LGBTQ community, and, unfortunately, this is particularly true for LGBTQ people of color, who are often an especially marginalized subset of an already marginalized group. Issues such as poverty, domestic violence, homelessness, harassment, addiction, religious intolerance, and interaction with the criminal justice system are all experienced at greater rates by the LGBTQ community and especially by LGBTQ people of color.
