Mayor Reed Gusciora issues statement on passing of New Jersey congressman Donald Payne Jr.

Trenton, N.J. - Rep. Donald Payne Jr., (D-Newark)., has died at age 65 after being hospitalized since early April for "a cardiac episode based on complications from his diabetes" according to his office. 

“As Mayor of Trenton, NJ, it is with profound sorrow that I acknowledge the passing of New Jersey Congressman Donald Payne Jr," Mayor Reed Gusciora said. "His unwavering dedication to public service, advocacy for the people of New Jersey, and commitment to social justice have left an indelible mark on our community and beyond. Congressman Payne's tireless efforts in Congress championing issues of education, healthcare, and economic opportunity have touched countless lives, embodying the spirit of leadership and compassion. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, loved ones, and all those whose lives he touched. May his memory be a blessing to us all."

Payne Jr., who planned to run for reelection in New Jersey's 10th Congressional District, was first elected to the House in 2012, succeeding his late father, Rep. Donald Payne Sr., who died of colon cancer. Payne was running unopposed in the Democratic primary.

He is survived by his wife and their three children.
