News & Announcements Posted on May 01, 2025

Trenton, N.J. – On Wednesday, April 30, Mayor W. Reed Gusciora, East Ward Councilman Joseph Harrison, Interim Parks & Recreation Director Paul Harris, and Mr. Gil Carter celebrated the newly constructed Gil Carter Playground. One of the oldest playground structures in the city, Gil Carter, no longer met current safety guidelines and was swiftly renovated.

“We are committed to creating safe, vibrant spaces where families can gather and children can thrive,” said Mayor Gusciora. “Our residents deserve nothing but the best — we are ensuring that our playgrounds include features that welcome children of all abilities, because every child deserves a chance to play.”

The revamped park now includes a new certified Federal ADA play structure, sensory musical pieces, a Zoom Twist, and a two-seat inclusive rocker. In addition to playground improvements, the park also received a new concrete curb and accessible sidewalk. A group grill and an accessible table will be added once the concrete is poured.

Mr. Gil Carter, whom the park is named after, stated, “Thank you to everyone who continues to invest in this park. I truly love the new upgrades and the happiness they will bring to families in this neighborhood.”

As Parks & Recreation continues its efforts to upgrade City parks and facilities, residents can expect new playgrounds at the following sites: Second Street Park, Rutherford Avenue Park, Cooper Park, Eagle Tavern/Wireworks, and Carlos Negron Park.

“I am proud to see the progress we’re making in upgrading our park playgrounds around the city,” stated Councilman Harrison. “Having a play area in the city where children can enjoy and access it within their community builds lasting memories and helps them feel valued and supported.”

“We want to ensure residents are having fun with our equipment but doing so safely.” Interim Director Harris said. “It is imperative that we keep all playgrounds up to date, clean, and efficient. As we continue to restore our parks, they will adhere to this standard.”
