News & Announcements Posted on February 01, 2023

Trenton N.J. – Today, Mayor Reed Gusciora and Trenton Police Department Director issued the following statement regarding video released by the Memphis Police Department.

The Trenton Police Department (TPD) and the Office of the Mayor are greatly disturbed by the death of Tyre Nichols in the custody of the Memphis Police Department. The officers involved have been terminated and charged with murder among other offenses. Our chief law enforcement officer, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, notes that a “very small percentage” of police officers are “bad cops.” In Trenton, we have an increased police presence over the weekend to ensure people can process this tragedy safely. TPD will protect residents’ constitutional right to peacefully protest. In Trenton, our officers undergo biannual de-escalation and use of force training as well as bystander intervention training to prevent cases like the one in Memphis from occurring here. We will enforce the city’s charter and state laws to help prevent this unlawful tragedy from occurring here.
