Trenton, N.J. — Trenton Water Works will be flushing water mains in Ewing Township starting on Tuesday, September 10 and lasting through Friday, September 27. This routine maintenance will take place between 8 p.m. and 12 a.m. to minimize inconvenience to impacted residents. Technicians will operate valves and open fire hydrants in the Ewing neighborhoods of Wilburtha and Scudders Falls, and sections of West Trenton along W. Upper Ferry Road, River Road, Bear Tavern Road, Summit Avenue, Wilburtha Road, Central Avenue and Decou Avenue.
"TWW undertakes this annual maintenance procedure to ensure high water quality and improve the overall performance of our 683-mile water-distribution system," said Michael Walker, spokesman for the 200-year-old Trenton Water Works, which produces 27 million gallons of drinking water each day. "We appreciate residents’ patience and understanding as we work to maintain water-quality excellence."
Unidirectional flushing is a standard operating procedure conducted by water systems that involves strategically operating valves and fire hydrants to increase the velocity of water flowing through isolated mains. It removes sediment, loose corrosion, and iron and manganese deposits, which elevates water quality and hydraulics.
Residents in the area of the work may experience low water pressure and brown water. This condition can be rectified by opening a tap for at least five minutes on the morning after the flushing until the water runs clear.
Trenton Water Works is among the largest publicly owned, urban water utilities in the United States. It supplies an average of 27 million gallons of Delaware River-sourced drinking water per day to 63,000 metered customers. It services more than 200,000 people in Trenton, parts of Hamilton Township, Ewing Township, Lawrence Township and Hopewell Township in Mercer County, New Jersey. Established more than 200 years ago, TWW operates a 60-million-gallon water-filtration plant and water-distribution system that includes a 100-million-gallon reservoir. TWW’s system has 683 miles of water mains varying in size from 4 to 48 inches in diameter, three pump stations, and six interconnections between TWW and other water suppliers.
