Mayor Reed Gusciora Invites Public to Attend Trenton Transit District Community Workshop

Virtual Meeting with the Planning Board on February 23, 2023 at 6:00 p.m.

Trenton N.J. –On Thursday, February 23, 2023 at 6:00 p.m., a virtual meeting with the Planning Board will be held, which will build on previous in-person workshops to discuss transit-oriented development in the City of Trenton.

Transit-oriented development is mixed-use residential and commercial development designed to take advantage of access to public transportation. Prior workshops have focused specifically on transit-oriented development around Walnut Avenue; Ewing-Carroll-Southard Street, and Lamberton Street. This meeting will look at the full transit-oriented development area of Trenton, which is the area around the Trenton Transit Center and our three light rail stations.

As the only city in New Jersey to serve three major railway systems (Amtrak, NJ Transit, and SEPTA), with service to New York and Philadelphia, Trenton has untapped potential to support dense, walkable, and mixed-use development near the City’s transit stations. As transit ridership continues to rise to pre-pandemic levels, now is the time to plan for improved pedestrian connections, amenities, housing, and mixed-use development – all within walking distance of our transit stations.

Mayor Reed Gusciora stated, “I encourage residents to attend the upcoming meeting, so that future transit-oriented development in the Capital City is guided by the ideas and suggestions of Trentonians, as we prepare our community-driven development plan.”

There will be a presentation by the Planning Division and our consultant team, followed by a discussion to get public feedback on preferences for key development sites throughout the area. Ultimately, the project will result in a cohesive, community-driven development plan for the Trenton Transit District - guiding development in the future. There will be multiple opportunities for the community to engage and share their ideas, thoughts, and feedback about the project.

The City of Trenton would like to inspire the community and property owners to participate in the planning process, so that the unique character and opportunities of each transit-oriented development area can be achieved. The project is being led by the City of Trenton Department of Housing and Economic Development with an advisory Project Planning Team of city, state, and local partners and support from a planning and design team led by WRT. This effort is partially funded by a Transportation and Community Development Initiative (TCDI) grant from the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC).
