Statement from Mayor W. Reed Gusciora on Federal Government Shutdown and Impact on SNAP Recipients

News & Announcements Posted on October 30, 2025

Trenton, N.J. – Mayor Reed Gusciora today issued a statement regarding the ongoing federal government shutdown and its devastating impact on residents who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

With more than 12,000 Trenton households depending on SNAP benefits to help put food on the table, the Mayor called the current federal impasse “unconscionable” and urged swift action from Washington to restore government operations and protect vulnerable families.

“It is unacceptable that thousands of Trenton residents—children, seniors, and working families—are being left to wonder how they will eat next week,” said Mayor Gusciora. “The federal government’s failure to resolve this shutdown and the President’s decision to target SNAP beneficiaries are not only cruel but dangerous. We are talking about our neighbors’ most basic need: access to food.”

Due to the ongoing shutdown, SNAP recipients may lose access to their benefits beginning November 1st. The City of Trenton is urging all residents who receive SNAP assistance to use their October allotments before the end of the month, as funds may be temporarily unavailable after October 31st.

Mayor Gusciora assured residents that the City is in communication with local nonprofits, community partners, and other government agencies to assess resources and coordinate support for those who may be affected.

He emphasized that the City of Trenton remains steadfast in supporting residents during this uncertain time. City officials are working closely with local food pantries, faith-based organizations, and community groups to expand access to emergency food and nutritional resources.

In anticipation of further disruptions, the City is also preparing to coordinate with community partners for residents who wish to donate non-perishable food items or volunteer in local relief efforts should the shutdown continue.

“We will not allow our residents to go hungry,” added Gusciora. “Trenton has always stood together in times of hardship, and this moment is no different.”

The City will continue to provide updates through its website, social media channels, and community partners as new information becomes available from the federal government.
