The City of Trenton proposes updates to certain sections of its Municipal Code related to its historic preservation framework to align procedures with the New Jersey Municipal Land Use Law (N.J.S.A. 40:55D-1 et seq.). These proposed changes establish application review procedures for all development applications affecting historic districts or landmarks. The new ordinance aims to establish a consistent and transparent process for preservation-related reviews, balance growth with conservation, and integrate historic preservation into broader land use planning, affirming the City’s commitment to protecting its cultural and architectural heritage while ensuring compliance with state law.
The proposed ordinance amendments will be introduced to the Trenton City Planning Board on June 12, 2025, for review and recommendations to the City Council. It will be presented to the City Council for a first reading on June 17, 2025, with the second reading and anticipated adoption scheduled for July 1, 2025.
