Point In Time Count

The Point-in-Time (PIT) count is a count of sheltered and unsheltered people experiencing homelessness on a single night in January. HUD requires that CoCs conduct an annual count of people experiencing homelessness who are sheltered in emergency shelter, transitional housing, and Safe Havens on a single night. Each count is planned, coordinated, and carried out locally.

The Point-In-Time (PIT) Count of the Homeless in New Jersey provides a statewide overview of households experiencing homelessness in our communities, including where they find shelter, what their needs are, and what causes contribute to their homelessness. The PIT count provides vital demographic and other statistics about families and people experiencing homelessness on a single night in January. These findings' data assist stakeholders in understanding how to effectively deploy housing resources and services in order to prevent and end homelessness.
