Sources of Lead Exposure

  • Homes built before 1978 (especially if there is evidence of cracked or peeling paint chips that could be ingested by children or result in inhalation of lead dust)
  • Leaded pipes found in older homes.
  • Consumer products including but not limited to toys with batteries, jewelry, spices, and dinnerware/dishes.
  • Cultural products (ex: home remedies, charms, ceremonial powders) made outside of the United States
  • Professions such as construction, landscaping, roofing, painting, auto-body repair, and law enforcement (risk for lead being tracked into the home).
  • Living in heavily traveled roadways or areas where demolition of old houses occurs.
