Populations at Higher Risk

Children: 

  • Children 6 and under are at the highest risk of lead poisoning due to mouthing behaviors, especially with lead contaminated items. 
  • Children 6 and older with known developmental delays, who may display mouthing behaviors similar to children younger than 6. 
  • Teens engaged with smoking or vaping, or that wear certain cosmetics. 
  • Infants fed formula made with contaminated tap water from lead pipes and plumbing parts. 
  • Children of immigrant or refugee families from an underdeveloped or rural country of origin. 

Adults: 

  • Pregnant women with PICA cravings (ingestion of non-food items)
  • Breastfeeding women with suspected exposure to lead 
  • Working adults that are exposed to lead-based products or soil from jobs/activities such as construction, home renovation, law enforcement, auto-repair, roofing, among others. 
    • Adults can track lead into the home through clothes, shoes, skin, hair, and hands and unknowingly expose children in the home.
